What Is Christian Astrology? Part 1

It's 12:25 AM on Wednesday as I begin to write this entry. I fell asleep early tonight and missed my planned 6-9 PM research session in Christian Astrology. Then I woke around 11:45 PM with some clarity on the topic. "When I get up from bed," I said to myself, "I will begin a series in Christian Astrology centered around the video Can Catholics Believe in Astrology?" I brushed my teeth and re-read my previous posts in this area. Then I half-decided to check the current astrological transits in LUNA. As I weighed doing so, I formed an intention. "Am I on the right path or the wrong path with this investigation of Christian Astrology? Let me know if there is something for me to see here, God." As soon as I opened the chart, at 12:12 AM, I saw that Pluto was exactly on the local Midheaven at 2 degrees in tropical Aquarius, strongly recalling my post from 14 July 2025 titled Pluto in Tropical Aquarius. A bit later, I realized that Pluto was on the Ascendant when I started to write A Cultural Astronomy Sub-Project Inventory.

What does this mean? Is Christian Astrology an oxymoron? Is it a heresy? Is the history of the topic of astrology within the thought of the Church a legitimate Christian field of study?

More specifically, what does this culmination of Pluto on the Midheaven in the second degree of tropical Aquarius mean for my life in Christ?

Here's what I can say at the moment: I think God is using this astrological sign to say, "Yes, Jonathan, there is something to this. You don't know exactly what it is I am trying to tell you through this sign, except that you are dying to sin and being born again in Christ. This is an encouragement to keep going in that direction. Test the spirits."

Should Christians take a cautious approach to astrology? Yes, I think they should. But then maybe I should say the same to astrologers looking into Christianity. What is the true Christianity? Is it easier or harder to find than the true astrology?

Should Christians assume that all astrology is a form of demonology? I hope not. But I am open to raising my guard as I learn new information.

Back to the main question. What is Christian Astrology? Well, Google tells us it is the name of a "seminal" 1647 book written by William Lilly (cf. Christian Astrology | Wikipedia). I find a free PDF and scan the beginning of Book I. Hmmm. There is something in Lilly's Christian Astrology that looks like genuine Christian faith, and much that looks like superstitious pseudo-science. More grist for the mill.

At the end of this session, I turn for a first look inside Early Christianity and Ancient Astrology (2007) by Tim Hegedus and add Benson Bobrick's The Fated Sky to my summer 2025 Amazon "Maybe" list.

Let me conclude with a tentative definition: Christian Astrology, if it is not always a heretical pseudo-scientific oxymoron, refers to the study and practice of astrology in a Christian way for a Christian purpose.
