Israel: A Response to Alan Garber at Harvard
My comment at 4:56 AM on Live at Vilna Shul with Alan Garber:
Deepest thanks to SHI from a gentile American friend of Israel for your exceptionally balanced and sensitive work. I am so glad I recently discovered your podcast in the course of my independent Jewish studies. I look forward to following this podcast in 2026.
My prayers for Alan Garber's success in his pivotal role as Harvard's 2nd Jewish President. How should President Garber help Harvard teach America about Israel, Zionism and Jewish moral leadership at a time when all three are under intense fire in the press and at The Hague? As someone who looks up to Harvard as the flagship of American higher education, I lean in the direction of wanting a statement from the Harvard administration that addresses the moral dilemma created by The Hague cases against Israel in a rigorous, balanced and empathic manner. It's not as if the moral success of Judeo-Christian civilization (reflected in both the Israel-American special relationship AND The Hague institutions) is peripheral to the Harvard mission, is it? But I understand I may be in the grip of the lesser argument here. Perhaps the moral success of the Israel-America special relationship and The Hague institutions is not core to Harvard's teaching, learning and research mission? Perhaps, in addition to remaining neutral on the question of US sanctions against the ICC, Harvard is also neutral on President Trump's claim that climate change is a hoax and that the recent ICJ advisory opinion regarding UN member states' climate change responsibilities is also morally irrelevant for Americans?
