Should the UN Security Council Vote on a Resolution to Elect Only a Woman for the Next Secretary-General?
11:50 AM Monday.
I would like to hear a Security Council debate on the issue during Slovenia's presidency if that is still at all possible. I won't have time this afternoon to hear the Slovenian Permanent Representative explain the Council's agenda for December, but this would be my recommendation. We've had nine consecutive males so far. Is it time for an all-woman field, and do we want to alternate by sex thereafter? Maybe this should be on the agenda of both the General Assembly and the Security Council for the month of December. Maybe it is an unbalanced idea. I know SG Guterres has spoken about the importance of ending the patriarchy. He would be an excellent opening briefer for a Council debate. So would PGA Baerbock.
I wonder what the Trump administration thinks. Would Secretary Rubio and the rest of the Cabinet agree that it's time to correct the P5's demonstrably sexist (discriminatory) "hiring" practice? We are talking about the head of an international civil service organization that is committed to gender equality by 2030 and the enhancement of women in peace and security.
In terms of American nominees, if they are even allowed, I would start with former UN Ambassador Samantha Power and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Either could do a fantastic job, I am sure. Neither might want the position. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would also be an excellent nomination from the Trump administration, but she would be the oldest to serve if she wanted the job and the Security Council liked her the most. I am sure the United States has at least 20 other truly excellent women it could nominate. But it's hard to say whether the Trump team is likely or unlikely to put forward a name.
End 12:17 PM.
