Confidence-Building Measures

6:23 PM Tuesday.

Thank you so much for your always excellent reporting and analysis, Amanda and David. As an American I am ashamed of President Trump's terrible remarks about the Reiner family tragedy. My deepest apologies. That is not who we are as a people. Let me next say that I am deeply concerned about Jewish safety worldwide. As a God-fearing Gentile, I believe that Jews have a special calling to be the light. I also believe that Jews in Israel and Diaspora are the canary in the coal mine as far as the success of post-WWII civilization is concerned (including reaching net zero by 2050, if that is even remotely possible). This said, I am not sure what exactly is going on in Australia. We need tougher gun legislation in Australia and especially in the US. That is one thing. We need better prevention of antisemitic incitement in Australia. That is another. We need to figure out what is going on with the recent ISIS attacks. Are they being coordinated? Is there a pro-Palestinian terrorist mastermind somewhere behind of all this? Maybe in Turkey or Qatar or an even more powerful state? Maybe Australian intelligence needs to think independently about all three of these strands.

At the same time, Prime Minister Netanyahu wants a pardon without teshuvah, he won't allow a state COI for October 7, he won't resign, he won't agree to a two-state horizon, he's in denial about the plausibility of South Africa's genocide case, he's accelerating West Bank settlement expansion, and he's throwing stones at Albanese on the center-left in Australia because people are angry and Islamists are taking advantage of it?

Those of us who are strong two-state Zionists on the center in America are thinking Netanyahu's far right solution is one-state apartheid. And that obviously just won't fly. On the far left, we have those who want a single state with a full right of return for Palestinian "refugees" and equal voting rights for everyone. That obviously just won't fly, either. What's it going to take for Israeli Jews to admit that a two-state horizon is the only practical way to proceed, even if all of Palestine was lawfully promised to the Jews at San Remo in 1920? We can't advance Trump's Gaza Plan to Phase 2 without getting into serious Palestinian state-building. I know it is fraught with terrifying security concerns for Israel, which we need to address with carefully sequenced deradicalization confidence-building measures, but what other way forward do we have? I am all ears!

End 6:27 PM.
