American Exceptionalism and the China Dream: Competing World Religions?
1:20 PM Friday.
I am immediately concerned that scholars in China might think I am promoting a civil world religion of American Exceptionalism under the guise of "interfaith world federalism." At this point I don't know enough about civil religion, American Exceptionalism or even precisely what I mean by interfaith world federalism to defend myself against this understandable suspicion. So why am I writing this post? I simply want to flag the question - are American Exceptionalism and the China Dream competing world religions in an apocalyptic "limits to growth" clash of civilizations, or are they complementary state religions in a transformational dialogue of civilizations? This is a broad scholarly question. On a much more personal level, I need to ask myself, and God, whether I am unconsciously or consciously putting a religious commitment to American Exceptionalism above a religious commitment to balanced UN Charter reform on the way to interfaith world federalism.
Then I suppose I also need to ask why I am singling out America and China, when exceptional status under the UN Charter is also given to France, Russia and the United Kingdom.
End 1:57 PM.
