Digital Minimalism? Struggling with a Hermitage Smartphone-Free Zone

4:03 PM Friday. I spend a fair amount of time keeping up with geopolitics, primarily but not exclusively as it relates to Israel. It is too much time on current affairs for me to become a diocesan Catholic hermit, to be sure, but maybe not too much time for me to become an independent Abrahamic hermit with a call to intellectual work in political theology:

Without digging deep into the roots of my sinful political curiosity - though I suppose this is eventually inevitable - I can at least double down on a smartphone-free hermitage zone. I have had this thought before, and I have written briefly about it, and I have even put it into practice with some success, but the success was only temporary.

The rule is simple: don't take the smartphone into the sleeping area, the religious reading area, or the meditation space.

Alright, there, I published the rule on my weblog and created an additional layer of accountability. Now I need to observe myself more carefully. Why exactly do I break this rule? Every time I break the rule, I will aim to leave a comment on this post explaining the reason. Then, after a suitable period of tracking, I will evaluate the results. Taking my list of reasons into account, is it better to break the rule, change the rule, or change my habits?

End 5:10 PM.
