Will a Two-State Solution Bring About God's Punishment on Israel and the United Nations?
This is an important question that came to mind as I was reading the fourth footnote after the abstract of ‘I am an Israeli’: Christian Zionism as American redemption | Culture and Religion Vol 14, No 3. Here is the section of the footnote that really grabbed my attention:
Similarly, Joel 3:2 reads: ‘I will gather all nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. There I will put them on trial for what they did to my inheritance, my people Israel, because they scattered my people among the nations and divided up my land’ (NIV). Again, for Christian Zionists this is not only a historical promise, but also a future one. Any nation that contributes to the division of Israel—through the promotion of the creation of a Palestinian State—will receive God's punishment. For example, Pat Robertson famously claimed that Ariel Sharon's stroke was the result of divine punishment after Israel disengaged from Gaza. Although this kind of theodicy is often shied away from publicly, during my work with Christian Zionists they have at times remorsefully suggested that many tragedies that have befallen Israeli and other leaders have been the result of misguided policies that brought the judgement of God upon them.

I won't try to answer the question at this point. I am just raising it for now. It's relevant to the UN two-state summit that has been rescheduled for 28 and 29 July 2025 (cf. Macron not expected at UN summit on two-state solution for Palestine and Israel | Emmanuel Macron | The Guardian). I say that I am a Christian Zionist for a two-state solution, but what if I am saying this because I have recently caved to misinformed political pressure, at the expense of alignment with both God's will for Israel and the true legal record as presented by UKLFI in WHOSE LAND? What if anything less than one Jewish state will bring about God's punishment on Israel and the United Nations? On the other hand, what if anything less than a two-state solution will bring about God's punishment on Israel and the United Nations?
These are deep and difficult theological questions that require searching prayer and scholarship across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Send us wisdom and clarity, Hashem. All of Palestine may belong to Jewish leadership by legal right in the same way that all of Jordan may belong to Arab leadership by legal right, and yet the Jewish right has not been honored by the local Arabs, the British, or the United Nations since the terrible breach of the 1939 White Paper. As a result, Hashem, does there now exist such a difficult demographic problem within Israel, that there is no other way to solve the problem except through a second two-state solution? After the separation of Palestine into an Arab-led Jordan and a Jewish-led Israel, is it now truly your will, Hashem, that we further subdivide Israel into a Jewish-led Israel and an Arab-led Palestine? Not because it was your will for the UN General Assembly to recommend partition in 1947, and not on the basis of lopsided advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice, but because it is your will now, given all that has transpired since 1939? Send us wisdom and clarity, Hashem. We know you want a ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible; we know you want humanitarian aid to reach the needy; but where and how do you want the Gazan Arabs to rebuild their lives? Is this the time for Israel to pursue total annexation for one Jewish state; total withdrawal for a two-state solution; or something in between? We desperately need a vision and a pathway forward, Hashem. We need both a long-term strategy and a 60-day ceasefire plan. Is a humanitarian city in southern Gaza the best next step? Is this a formula for counterterrorism, deradicalization, humanitarian relief, and voluntary emigration, or is it a formula for genocide and ethnic cleansing?
