The Messiah Complex
After a month of experimentation, yesterday I changed the title of this blog to The Messiah Complex. I also changed the description to "Discerning a Christian Vegan Eremitic Blogging Vocation with a Psychiatric Disability. Published Daily at Noon Eastern."
The Messiah Complex is a complex concept. It alludes to several related ideas that I plan to touch on intermittently in the months and years ahead, God willing:
- What is the past, present, and future of the Messianic idea in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam?
- What is a Messiah in secular terms?
- Are all major religions, including civil religions, messianic to some extent?
- What are the features of an unhealthy Messiah Complex?
- What are the features of a healthy Messiah Complex?
- Have there been times when the Synagogue, Church, or Mosque considered non-belief a sign of mental illness?
- On other hand, have there been times in the history of the state when belief in Judaism, Christianity or Islam was taken as a sign of mental illness - of belief in a "God delusion"?
- What about the thesis that Jesus was mentally ill?
- What have been my personal experiences with the Messiah Complex?
I am not looking to write a doctoral dissertation on the Messiah Complex or make it the exclusive focus of this blog, but it will be a key thread running throughout (cf. Madman or Messiah? In Darkness We Wait in Hope).
Allow me to conclude this quick introduction on a light note with a quip from the actor Jim Carrey (shown in the image at top): "My psychiatrist says I have a messiah complex. But I forgave him."
