The Iran File Heading into Round 3 of Talks in Oman

There is an important meeting between the US and Iran coming up in Oman this weekend. If I understand the situation correctly, China does not believe that unilateral US sanctions on Iran are appropriate, regardless of Iran's malign nuclear activities, its sponsorship of terrorism, and its human rights abuses. The Trump administration, on the other hand, has inherited a very different perspective on the Iran file. In my opinion, the Trump negotiating team may want to propose to the Iranian delegation that enrichment of uranium on Iranian soil is a possibility if Iran wants to address all categories of its sanctions in one agreement. But if these are strictly nuclear talks leading strictly to a nuclear agreement that brings only nuclear sanctions relief, then the Emirati model may be as good as it can get for Iran.

Put another way, perhaps the Trump team should say that Iran might be able to enrich its own uranium up to 3.67% if the nation seriously commits to improve its human rights record and renounce its sponsorship of genocidal anti-Zionist terrorism. Otherwise, the idea of allowing enrichment by Iran is a non-starter.

Constitutional reform in Iran is likely the only way to remove all US sanctions on the country. Regime change in Iran is inevitable. The primary question is how that regime change takes place. Khamenei still has time to choose a legacy of enlightened Shia convergence, reform, and reconciliation with Israel and America. Trump has made it abundantly clear that he wants only peace and prosperity for the wonderful Iranian people. So has Netanyahu.

But I am far from an Iran expert. The Iran file is enormously complex, especially taking Shia religious beliefs into account. And why is an aspiring Christian vegan hermit in upstate New York writing about the latest round of talks between Iran and the United States? Isn't the Iran file outside my locus of control? Am I breaking silence merely to meddle sinfully in foreign affairs, helping no one in the process, and perhaps making the situation even worse? Send wisdom, Holy Spirit.
